28 Feb 2014 (Friday)

Dear children,

I hope you enjoyed reading "Food Fit For A King" today. We talked about bowls of custard, pots of stew, plates of jelly and other food which got all of us hungry! We also talked about words like "quaked", "quivered", "stammered", "stuttered", "mumbled" and "muttered".

You would have completed quite a bit of independent work in your "Food Fit For A King" booklet while I was continuing with the one-to-one practice. I'm looking forward to marking those!

I saw quite a number of disappointed faces when you received your English test marks today. We did not do as well as expected. Let's work harder together. Don't forget to share your marks with your parents! You will be able to bring home your paper when we've finished going through all the corrections.

Here are some reminders:
1) Show your parents your marks sheet for the Reading and Response practice test. They need to know how good you are so far so that they can help you improve and prepare for the real test next week. Ask for a signature too. Bring back the marks sheet on Monday to show me.
2) Complete your journal entry and submit it on Monday.
3) Please hand up your composition on Monday if you did not manage to complete it in class.

I'll update the ice-cream stick scores for this month on Sunday afternoon  at 3 p.m. after I've marked your spelling books. Check back on Sunday again if you can't wait!

Have a blessed weekend with your family! :)

27 Feb 2014 (Thursday)

Dear children,

We spent some time learning how to draw comparison models for math today before continuing with our Reading and Response practice. We also learnt to read a problem sum very carefully so that we can decide whether a part-whole model or a comparison model is the right one to draw. Looking at the independent work you did today in your Part B booklets, I can say that most of you are clear about the differences between the 2 kinds of models and are able to choose the right kind to draw for a 1-step word problem. Many of you are also neat in your model drawing and are able to label your bars correctly. Keep up the good work! :) As mentioned, I will be awarding ice-cream sticks for perfect work and neat work.

If you find yourself still not very sure, please log on to the AskNLearn portal to watch the videos and try the practices there.

If you have a model-drawing ruler, please bring it along for tomorrow's and next week's math lessons. That ruler can help you save quite a bit of time when drawing the bars.

Remember to revise for tomorrow's spelling test. It's your chance to earn one more ice-cream stick for your group on the last day of February! :)

Prepare your spelling book so that we can start immediately tomorrow without delay.
That means that your spelling book should have:
1) Tomorrow's date, spelling number, and the numbers 1 to 11 written on a fresh page
2) Your parent's signature for the previous spelling test
3) Its past corrections and re-corrections completed
4) Its contents page updated

Have a blessed evening with your family! :)

26 Feb 2014 (Wednesday)

Dear children,

It was a joy to see many of your happy faces when you received your marks for your math test. Remember to share your marks and your joy with your parents because they have worked hard together with you! :)

We went through Section A of the paper and will continue to go through it when we have time over the next few days. You will be able to bring home your paper once all your corrections have been completed.

Many of you were still not fully clear about part-whole models, so we spent some more time learning about that. Please log on to the AskNLearn portal and learn more if you have not done so.

We started on our one-to-one practice for Reading and Response. Don't worry if you have not been called up for the practice test today. You will have your turn tomorrow or on Friday. In the meantime, don't miss the chance to practise reading aloud to your parents!

Here are some reminders:
1) If you failed the previous spelling, please remember your re-spelling tomorrow. Bring your spelling book with your parent's signature, completed corrections, and updated contents page in it.
2) Prepare for Friday's spelling. This is the last spelling test for this term.
3) Write your first journal entry in your exercise book. The topic is "Last Weekend". Remember to leave a line after each line that you write. You must write at least 5 sentences. Do not write more than 2 pages. If you like, you can draw a picture and colour it after you have written your journal entry. Submit this on Monday.

Have an awesome evening with your family! :)

25 Feb 2014 (Tuesday)

Dear children,

I hope you conquered the English test today easily! We did not have much time together, but I hope you enjoyed our time making your hanging mobile. Most of you have not completed your mobile, so we will continue with it next Tuesday.

I have just received your math test papers from the teacher marking them.

We did not hit our class target of half the class scoring full marks. We only have 7 perfect scorers.

However, I'm glad that 29 of you improved your scores since the Practice Test. That shows that you have put in hard work! Keep it up!

12 of you made an improvement of at least 7 marks. That's awesome and I'm very proud of you! A certain girl from our class made a huge jump of 14.5 marks! Wow! :)

I'm looking forward to seeing as much improvement in your English test papers when the teachers mark them tomorrow.

Have a blessed and restful evening with your family. See you tomorrow! :)

24 Feb 2014 (Monday)

Dear children,

We had a class practice today to prepare for our upcoming Reading and Response Test. You would have learnt how to read a passage aloud in a more interesting manner and how to answer the few questions that come after the passage. We will be having our one-to-one practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to better prepare you for the real test next week. In the meantime, you can practise reading aloud some of your storybooks and ask your parents how you can improve! :)

We also spent some time to finish up our discussion on the composition. Over the next few days, you'll have time in class to write your story. Think about it in the meantime.

During our FTGP, we watched a hilarious video of the Thirsty Crow and from it, learnt to set goals that are specific, achievable and timely. Remember S.A.T.. Complete Page 44 and Page 45 of your FTGP Journal together with your parents and submit it on Wednesday.

We moved on to Unit 3 for math and learnt how to draw part-whole models to represent word problems. Log on to AskNLearn to learn more about it. Watch the video below to see where you should go after you have logged in:

I will be away tomorrow for a course and will try to rush back to spend the last period with you. Do put on your best behaviour as usual when the relief teacher is around for art.

Please bring along the following items for art lesson tomorrow:
1) A sheet of drawing paper
2) Crayons / Oil pastel
3) Scotchtape
4) Scissors
5) String
6) 2 straws or chopsticks

You will be making a mobile like the one shown here:

I wish you all the best for your English test tomorrow! It will be held right after recess, so please don't play till you're perspiring during recess. You need to be able to focus to do well. Work hard! :)

21 Feb 2014 (Friday)

Dear children,

I hope you conquered the math test easily today! The teachers will be marking the papers next week and I'm really looking forward to knowing how well you did! :)

We have only 8 Super Spellers this week. They are:

Raeann and Luke from Emerald,
Ezra and Risa from Avengers,
Elijah and Janine from Sapphire,
Brian from Gold, and
Lea from Rainbow.

As promised, they each earned two ice-cream sticks for their group.

I was glad to read many improved stories when I was marking your composition corrections today. Your story would certainly have become better if you had answered the questions that I asked you in the margin of your paper. Keep thinking of how you can make your writing better!

We spent some time today continuing our discussion on the next composition. There were lots of good ideas from you! Keep thinking! We will continue with our last picture next week.

Here's the ice-cream sticks update for this week.

Sapphire is leading so far! Will Sapphire win this month again? Or will another group surpass them in the final week of February? ;)

Please rest well and spend time with your family even as you prepare for Tuesday's English test this weekend. Have a blessed weekend! :)

20 Feb 2014 (Thursday)

Dear children,

We spent some time going through the English practice test today. Although we didn't have anyone scoring full marks this time round, I'm glad many of you were really close! Almost half the class scored 20 or more marks out of 25 marks. That's quite good, but we can do better! After today's lesson, you would have known where you went wrong. Put in effort to work on those areas and I'm sure you will do better for the actual English test next Tuesday! :)

We also went through some questions from the AskNLearn Math Practice Quiz 1. That should help you prepare for your math test tomorrow, which will begin at 1.30 p.m..

Here are some reminders:
1) There is spelling tomorrow.
2) If you did not bring your composition corrections to submit today, please pass it to me tomorrow.
3) Show your parents the English practice test paper and request for their signature.
4) Flip through all the pages in your Chicken Rice booklet. We have gone through all the questions in class before, so please work on the remaining corrections at home on your own. Here are the answers to some parts of the booklet which you might need more help with:

Grammar: Prepositions (Page 7)
1) Mr Tan likes to go to the park.
2) We aim the arrow at the target during archery.
3) I am going to send the parcel to my cousin in Hong Kong.
4) The children are looking at the giraffes.

Comprehension MCQ (Page 11-12):
1) 4
2) 1
3) 3
4) 1
5) 2

Comprehension Open-Ended (Page 14)

1) He sold chicken rice at a coffee shop near his home.
2) It kept them cool when the weather was hot.
3) They were busiest during lunch time.
4) He felt bored doing nothing at home.
5) He closed his stall every Sunday.

Have a blessed evening with your family! :) Please remember to rest well tonight.

19 Feb 2014 (Wednesday)

Dear children,

We spent today completing an English practice test and going through the corrections for the Math practice test. I'm looking forward to marking your English practice test! We will go through the paper tomorrow to prepare you for your English test on Tuesday.

Here are some reminders:
1) If you have not completed your composition corrections, please complete it. Submit it tomorrow.
2) If you are one of the few who still have re-corrections in your English or math booklets, please finish those corrections at home and submit the booklets tomorrow.
3) If you have not completed all 4 math practice quizzes, please complete them. I spent time to create those additional practice quizzes for you because you said you wanted to achieve full marks, so make good use of them! You must complete at least Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 before school tomorrow.

Have a fruitful evening! :)

18 Feb 2014 (Tuesday)

Dear children,

We didn't have much time together today, but I'm glad we managed to go through corrections for Sections A and B of the math practice paper. Please show your paper to your parents so that they know where you need their help with. I will need them to sign it too. Bring the paper back tomorrow so that we can finish up Section C.

I have created 4 math practice quizzes for you on the AskNLearn portal so that you can practise more as you continue to aim for perfection! Here is the AskNLearn web address: https://lms.asknlearn.com/SHPS/
Please use your username and password from last year to log on.

Each quiz has a time limit of 45 minutes and includes questions to prepare you for Friday's test. You can try each quiz as many times as you like! If I were you, I would try and try until I get full marks for all of them! :)

We will work on an English practice test tomorrow if we have time.

Have a fruitful evening ahead!

17 Feb 2014 (Monday)

Dear children,

I have marked the math practice test you did today. Luke is the only one who scored full marks. There were 6 others who were quite close. Most of you scored between 21 to 24 marks. Unfortunately, there were 5 who did not pass the practice test.

No matter what your results are, remember that it is not the end of the world. This practice test is supposed to prepare you for the test on Friday, so if you did not do too well this time, you know it's time to look at where you went wrong! Aim to become better in those areas! :)

I will be away for a course tomorrow, so I will go through the practice test with you only on Wednesday when I return. Over the next few days, we will be having 3 more online practice quizzes on AskNLearn to help you improve. Work hard!

You would have received your composition today. I have made many changes to most of your stories to make them better. You would also find comments and questions written all over. Please read those words carefully before you start on your corrections. Write the whole story again on foolscap paper with the improvements made. Submit it on Wednesday. I will give you your composition score after you have properly submitted your corrections. Improving your story is more important than seeing your score.

Here are some reminders:
1) We started on our second composition of the term today. Please bring the writing package back tomorrow. The relief teacher will give you instructions regarding it.
2) If you have not submitted your FTGP journal today, please submit it tomorrow.
3) Please bring your colour pencils, crayons and/or markers for art tomorrow. Please also bring along a piece of drawing paper. The relief teacher will tell you what to do.

Have a blessed evening with your family! :)

Vanessa, Luke and Raeann from Emerald
Jonathan from Avengers
David, Joel and Phoebe from Frozen
Seth and Janine from Sapphire
Natalie and Christian from Ninja-Fairy
Zhi Zong from Rainbow
Jenna and Amelie from Diamond

It's great that we no longer have anyone who needs to retake spelling! Let's continue to work hard and keep improving! :)

As promised, here's the ice-cream sticks update for this week. I have not included the scores from math Exercise 3 and Exercise 4.

Let's continue to work hard in the third week of February! See you tomorrow!

Friday, February 14, 2014

14 Feb 2014 (Friday)

Dear children,

We spent our math lesson today completing the remaining corrections for the Unit 2 booklets. You would have received all your 6 booklets for Unit 1 and 2 so that over this weekend, you can revise for the upcoming Practice Test on Monday. That Practice Test will be 45-minute long and will prepare you for the actual Math Test next Friday. Give it your best!

Please also get your parents to sign the booklets if they have not. Some of you might still have some re-corrections that are not yet marked. I will mark them on Monday when you return the booklets to me.

We had another round of birthday celebration today when Isaac's parents came during recess. I'm sure you loved the cake and the goodie bags they gave you! All of you are really blessed!

For English, we spent some time completing two comprehension exercises and constructing sentences with the words "when", "went" and "greeted". I hope you won't confuse "when" and "went" anymore! We also had our spelling. I'm looking forward to marking your spelling books! I'll update the ice-cream stick scores for this week on Sunday after I have done that. Check back on Sunday noon for the scores!

Have a blessed weekend with your family! :)

13 Feb 2014 (Thursday)

Dear children,

It was wonderful for us to be able to witness the Junior Leaders Investiture this afternoon.

Congratulations, Junior Leaders, for having been selected to take on this important position. May you grow as servant leaders in your years of serving the school and your friends!

I'm sure all of you enjoyed the birthday party today! Thanks to many of your parents who put in the time, effort and money to organise the party for us, we got to celebrate the birthdays of the February babies! Here are some of the photographs taken today by some of your parents:

I'm sure you like the goodie bags given to you by the mummies and daddies too!

For math today, we learnt about working backwards in our Part C booklet. I'm glad that we managed to complete the whole booklet today. That means we are almost ready for the test next Friday! Almost, but not yet. It's time to sharpen ourselves for perfection.

Please remember to prepare for your spelling and dictation tomorrow. Do you remember what I promised the class if all 32 of you get full marks? ;)

Have a blessed evening with your family! :)

12 Feb 2014 (Wednesday)

Dear children,

I could sense your joy when we finally completed the 53-page Part A math booklet for Unit 2 today. It was a pretty thick booklet, but we conquered it anyway! :)

We will work on the Part C booklet tomorrow, where there will be more challenging problems. There will also be a Practice Test next Monday to prepare you for the Math Test next Friday.

As promised, here's the chicken rice recipe that we put together during English lesson. Let's hope the chicken rice cooked using this recipe will taste as good as Mrs Wong's!

Here are today's reminders:

1) Please complete Exercise 3 and Exercise 4 of your Unit 2 Part B (green) booklets. Fill in the section "One thing I have learnt from this unit" on the last page too. Each perfectly completed exercise will earn you one ice-cream stick for your group. I expect you to work on it on your own though. Do your best. If you really don't know how to do a question, leave it out first. I will guide you in class.

2) Junior Leaders who missed part of the math lesson because of your Investiture rehearsal, please also complete Page 45 to Page 53 of your Part A (blue) booklets. The digits for Page 53 are 1, 6 and 3 (for first try) and 5, 4 and 2 (for second try).

3) Wei Xiang and Phoebe, please bring your swimming reply slip tomorrow. Mdm Freda wants it.

Have a fruitful evening! :)

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

11 Feb 2014 (Tuesday)

Dear children,

It was good to have all of you complete your unfinished artwork from last week today. I like what I saw. Most of you are becoming better at sharing your materials with your classmates without arguing. That's great. Keep it up!

We learnt how to insert tables and resize clipart in PowerPoint during the computer lesson with Mr Edwin. I saw most of you enjoying yourselves making your rabbits, sharks, and other animals taller, shorter, fatter and thinner. If you have PowerPoint installed in your computer at home, do practise how to play around with the tables and clipart so that you won't forget the steps!

Math lesson was spent practising more subtraction with regrouping. We will surely complete our Booklet A by tomorrow and move on to Exercises 3 and 4 of our Booklet B. That's when you can earn ice-cream sticks for your group, remember? ;)

Here are a few reminders:

1) If you have not played the game I posted yesterday, please play it latest by Wednesday night. It should take you not more than 20 minutes. I expect to see all your comments by Thursday morning.

2) If you did not bring your I-Read book today, please remember to bring it tomorrow to pass it to your friend. Be a good friend to your friend and don't cause him or her to have fewer days to read his or her book. The next book exchange will be on next Tuesday.

Have a blessed evening with your family! :)

Monday, February 10, 2014

10 Feb 2014 (Monday)

Dear children,

Math lesson today was, once again, very fruitful. I like how focused all of you were. We aimed to complete 6 activities and we met our target! Most of you are already experts at adding 3-digit numbers, but some of you are not too good at subtracting yet, especially when it involves regrouping. To improve your subtraction skills, please spend some time playing this game today:

You may use a piece of rough paper to help you if you cannot subtract mentally.

Your goal is to achieve the SmartScore of 100. That's when the game will end and you will see the time spent and number of problems you got correct.

At the end of the game, comment on this blog post to tell me:
1) Time spent
2) Number of problems correct

(I spent 1 minute and 5 seconds and got 14 problems correct. Try beating me!)

We spent our FTGP lesson discussing the story "The Ant and the Grasshopper" and how important it is to prepare and plan. We talked about Alif's timetable and how it could have been made better. Many of you gave very good suggestions! I'm looking forward to seeing your timetables. Remember to complete pages 42 and 43 of your FTGP journal together with your parents. Bring the journal back next Monday.

For English, we listed down the ingredients for the chicken rice recipe but didn't manage to complete the whole recipe after all the work we did. We will continue with that tomorrow. I will remember your request and put up the recipe when it's done so that your parents can cook it for you at home! :)

Please remember to bring your I-Read book tomorrow for the book exchange.

Have a good time of bonding with your family tonight! :)

7 Feb 2014 (Friday)

Dear children,

I hope you enjoyed our time cooking chicken rice together today. Mrs Wong said that she had a great time cooking with you! Thanks to the chef's assistants Joel, Ashley, Seth, Thaneeisha and Natalie, we had chicken rice to eat today!

:) Here are the photographs from today:

I'll need your help on Monday to put together Mrs Wong's secret recipe so that I can cook it on my own next time! ;)

I've marked your spelling books. Here are this week's Super Spellers:

Luke, Raeann and Vanessa from Emerald
Jonathan from Avengers
David, Shineta, Joel and Phoebe from Frozen
Elijah, Seth and Janine from Sapphire
Natalie and Thaneeisha from Ninja-Fairy
Wei Xiang from Gold
Jenna and Amelie from Diamond
Zhi Zong from Rainbow

They each earned an ice-cream stick for their respective groups because of the effort they put in! Did you notice that every member of Frozen is a Super Speller this week? :)

We had a fruitful time practising more story sums involving the regrouping of ones and tens. Let's continue to be focused so that we can learn more next week!

The first week of February has just passed. Here's the ice-cream sticks update for this week. I have not included the scores from the math practices.

Who's leading?

Have a blessed weekend with your family! :)
